Removable Bridges
Also known as a removable partial denture, this type of bridge can be easily taken out of the mouth for cleaning and is generally less expensive than fixed bridges, although fixed bridges may feel more stable and comfortable. Normally, removable bridges have replacement teeth attached to gum-colored plastic bases connected by metal framework. This type of bridge attaches to your natural teeth with metal clasps or precision attachments. Sometimes, however, a claspless removable bridge may provide better support and esthetics. Also, crowns on your natural teeth may improve the way a removable bridge fits your mouth. Usually, your dentist will have you wear a removable bridge for the first 24 hours in order to identify any parts requiring adjustment. The bridge may put too much pressure on one area, in which case your dentsist can adjust the bridge to fit more comfortably. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, your dentist may recommend that you remove the bridge before going to sleep and put it back on when you awaken. The advantages of a removable bridge are that they are usually easier to repair and less expensive, while the disadvantages are that they can be less stable than alternative choices, they can break or be lost, some people find removable bridges uncomfortable, and some people are embarrassed to take out their teeth at night and for cleaning. Deciding how to replace missing teeth is an important decision, so confer with your dentist when deciding which option will work best for you.
